Java Image Map Converter

This is a small java utility program for converting server-side image maps to client-side maps. It is the same, in terms of functionality, to the windows utility "ServerToClient.exe". The main difference is that this one is written in Java, specifically using the Swing GUI toolkit. As such, it will run on any Java enabled platform. It has been tested with JDK 1.1.8, and requires Swing 1.1.1. It may work with JDK 1.2, but that hasn't been attempted.

This the first alpha version of the program and, like the windows application, we are looking for server-side imagemap files to test it with. If you have any server-side mapfiles that do not convert properly, please send them to clown.scheuhammer@utoronto.ca.

The following installers include the image map converter as well as a number of server-side client maps to test it with. Choose the installer/download for the platform you use:

• Windows: This is a zip file that contains an installer -- unzip, extract, and run the installer.
• Macintosh installer: Requires MRJ 2.1.4.
• Unix installer.
• Download for other platforms. Follow this link for instructions on what to do with the downloaded file. Note that these have not been tested.

How to Use

• Use the "Choose..." button or the File "Open Server-side Map File..." menu item to load in a server-side map. A number of such maps are included with the application.
• Once loaded, the server-side map text is shown in the upper panel of the window. It is automatically converted to client-side html that is displayed in the lower panel.
• The "Edit" menu has a menu item for changing the NAME attribute of the MAP element. You can also change the name by highlighting it directly in the lower panel, and typing in a new name.
• The "Edit" menu also has a menu item for cycling through the AREA elements and prompting for ALT text for each area. Again, you can do this directly by typing in 'ALT="some alt text"' in the client-side text panel.
• Use the "Save as..." button, or the File "Save Client-side Map File" menu item to save the client-side text.
• To quit the application, choose the "Quit" menu item.
